The Western Massachusetts ARES section is planning a section wide Simulated Emergency Test (SET) early in May. Volunteer participation is needed in two key areas:
1) We are currently looking for volunteers with HF station capabilities across several bands to enable us to develop an inter-county relay system in the event of a major disaster that might knock out all other means of communications. Stations with the potential to communicate into neighboring WMA counties using HF frequencies are needed to participate in several localized drills with challenging conditions in preparation for a section wide Inter-County capability exercise prior to the formal SET.
We presently run a successful HF Emergency Net on Sunday mornings; additional skills must be developed and tested that could enable more effective operations under adverse noise and propagation conditions, and with an additional focus on passing formal messages into the National Traffic System (NTS) should that need arise within our Section. Results and findings will be incorporated into our Section Emergency Communications Plan, and an HF team established that would be formally called upon during an emergency activation.
2) Also needed are volunteers with VHF simplex station capabilities to develop a relay system across all WMA counties. Stations with the potential to communicate between neighboring counties using VHF Simplex frequencies are needed to participate in several localized drills in preparation for a section wide Inter-County capability test prior to the formal SET.
Additionally, we need to test simplex communications within individual counties and document all findings, incorporating all the above results into our Section Emergency Communications Plan. The goal is to establish a VHF Simplex team that would be formally called upon during an emergency activation.
Those wishing to participate in any of the above activities are asked to register under their own counties using the web site listed below, or by contacting their respective Emergency Coordinator for the county where they reside. A list of email contacts is provided at the end of this announcement.
Thank you in advance for your help in improving the emergency communications capabilities
of the western Massachusetts ARES section.
